What is Kauli ya Lamu?
Kauli ya Lamu is a community broadsheet, published monthly in Lamu, Kenya.Kauli strives to empower people through information about events, initiatives and development on Lamu Island and the Lamu Archipelago in general. This media platform, in the shape of a broadsheet, functions as a tool for the community: increasing local knowledge and informing the community as a means of encouraging awarenessabout plans and decisions that affect their lives. Kauli ya Lamu, is a Kiswahili phrase meaning “the word of Lamu”; an appropriate one that indicates its origins and its target readership.

Goals
The goal of Kauli ya Lamu is to provide civic education for the Lamu community by producing a monthly newsletter or broadsheet that covers local developments and events in Lamu. By keeping the people informed and raising awareness about issues they face, the local community is provided with resources to actively take part in decision-making about the happenings that affect their lives and livelihoods. To ensure that Kauli is widely read, the broadsheet is published in Kiswahili and distributed freely to CBO’s, schools, markets and shops, and mosques and churches. This way, the broadsheet is accessible to a wide audience of all ages. Our goal is to provide relevant information and establish a sense of community and commitment among the people of Lamu.

Kauli ya Lamu is published by Chonjo Community Action Group (CCAG), a community-based organisation (CBO) registered with the Department of Social Services. The mission of CCAG is to empower people through knowledge. Therefore, the organization is first and foremost a tool for the community. CCAG works with other local CBO’s on Kauli ya Lamu, including: Lamu Youth Alliance, Tusharuiani and Lamu Safi. CCAG also launched and published Chonjo magazine at its inception.
